Embracing Self-Care

A marquee style sign that says "Self care isn't selfish"

At some time or another, we have all been told to practice self-care, but what

does that mean? Self-care is taking actionable steps in doing something that is mindful

and breathes life into you, but why is it important?

Imagine for a moment that your mind is a neighborhood, what do you see? Are

there kids playing? What color are the trees? Are there people around? Do you feel

comfortable? Would you feel safe to walk freely in this neighborhood?

Without self-care, our minds become dangerous and toxic to our well-being. Our

negative thoughts kill the trees, our self-doubt makes life grey, the stress of life can

leave us feeling alone.

Part of this battle is learning that self-care is not only what you do. An overlooked

part of self-care is really paying attention to how you are treating yourself. Are you hard

on yourself? Do you discourage yourself? Do you allow yourself the grace to try new

things and be bad at them at first? Are you taking care of your body? We can be our

own biggest critic. Showing yourself some grace and learning how to speak to yourself

in a kind way could do wonders in creating more space to deal with life more effectively.

Self-care does not have to be the same for everyone, and it is important to tailor

your routine to what helps you as an individual. Some people really enjoy time outdoors,

while others love being alone in their home reading a book. What you do does not

matter as long as it speaks to you and feeds your soul. Find something that allows you

to reconnect with you and the things or people that you love.

Life can be stressful, and it is so short. Why not enjoy it a little bit?
