The psychological impact of addictive behaviors is hard to condense into one post. Some of the typical impacts include anxiety, depression, disconnection, isolation, guilt, and the list goes on. The greatest impact of addiction is shame. Shame is different than guilt and is internalized, creating a belief that who I am is not enough. It isn’t that I have done something bad, it is I am bad. Shame is a downward spiral that exponentially increases other negative impacts in the psychological critical life area, as well as others.
